Movie of the Day: Tombstone

Where to Watch

Why Watch It Now
A western starring Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer and Sam Elliott would be just as exciting today as it was 25 years ago (R.I.P.Bill Paxton). Panos Cosmatos' more modernized take may not be the best Wyatt Earp/Doc Holliday movie (John Ford's My Darling Clementine and John Sturges Gunfight at the O.K. Corral probably meet at sundown in front of the old saloon for that distinction) but it’s definitely the most entertaining. The film also adapts the well-worn story for a more revisionist audience who can think beyond simple white hat/black hat distinctions without burning the heroes' reputations in effigies. Both this movie and Unforgiven, as well as Quentin Tarantino, are probably the reason that westerns have transitioned into the 21st century at all.
Bonus trivia: Director Cosmatos is the father of filmmaker Panos Cosmatos, the man who gave us 2018’s cult hit Mandy.
Double bonus trivia, family ties edition: Screenwriter Kevin Jarre was the adopted son of legendary composer Maurice Jarre (and by the transitive property, the adopted brother of electronic composer Jean-Michel Jarre).
