Why Watch It Now
Sydney Pollack's adaptation of John Grisham's bestseller tells a story about a lawyer who turns against his clients when he discovers they commit a bunch of crimes. Once upon a time, this was considered speculative legal fiction. Tom Cruise plays Mitch McDeere, a name that's amazingly not the product of Aaron Sorkin, an idealistic young lawyer whose dream job turns into a paranoid nightmare; in other words, imagine a younger, incredibly good looking version of Michael Cohen with a slightly higher ethical bar. The supporting cast of Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Holly Hunter, Gary Busey and Wilford Brimley is basically a 90's character acting bingo. The screenplay was adapted by Pollack's regular collaborator David Rayfiel, along with contributions from Hurlyburly playwright David Rabe and legendary Chinatown scribe Robert Towne.
