Why Watch It Tonight
What better way to usher in 2019 with a movie set exactly 30 years in the future, the sequel to a sci-fi classic set in the year… 2019? Besides the fact that it expires from streaming options tomorrow? While the imagined cinematic universe of the original Blade Runner will look nothing like the actual Los Angeles of 2019 – barring some serious going down as the clock strikes midnight – Denis Villenueve’s controversial follow-up to Ridley Scott’s adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? may offer more relevance to the future. Villeneuve is careful to pay homage to the original (though even the meaning of original can be debated given all the subsequent director’s cuts – hey, that’s also a big question of these movies too!) while also updating the story towards digital consumption and environmental catastrophism that seem like a more prophetic version of technology’s effect on the human condition. A the very least, the visually stunning story can be enjoyed at all levels and types of intoxication.
Bonus Trivia, Semi-Spoiler Alert: The film winks at but does not definitively resolve the disputed question of whether Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is a replicant.
